WITS Online Application 2025

The University of Witswatersrand (WITS) online applications for the 2025 academic year, are now available for individuals interested in pursuing new undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications. The application window for WITS runs from April 4th to September 30th 2024. All applicants, regardless of nationality or language, are encouraged to apply. This article will guide you on a smooth and successful WITS online application.

The origins of Wits University lie in the South African School of Mines, which was established in Kimberley in 1896 and transferred to Johannesburg as the Transvaal Technical Institute in 1904, becoming the Transvaal University College in 1906 and renamed the South African School of Mines and Technology four years later.

The University of Witswatersrand has 5 faculties encompassing the

  • Sciences, Commerce
  • Law, Management
  • Engineering
  • Health Sciences
  • Humanities [with 33 schools offering over 3000 courses]

WITS Online Application Closing Dates

The closing dates for the various category of application to the University of Witswatersrand (WITS) has been made know to everyone and these dates are as follows:

  • 30 June – Faculty of Health Sciences (all programmes)Bachelor of Architectural Studies; Bachelor of Audiology, Bachelor of Speech-Language Pathology; BA Film and TV
  • 30 September – All other University programmes
  • 30 September – Residence applications

All grade 12 students who wish to be a part of WITS by the 2025 academic year should make sure to apply within the period made available for application as the University will not be accepting any late application.

WITS Online Application Process

To apply, go to www.wits.ac.za/applications/

  1. You may apply for a maximum of three programmes (order of choice does not matter).
  2. Do you meet the admission requirements for your degree of choice?
  3. Apply before the closing date.
  4. Apply using your names as they appear on your ID book/card or passport (do not use initials or nicknames).
  5. If you apply for two programmes within one Faculty, you are advised to apply for one programme in a less restricted faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce or Science).
  6. Try to keep your study options open, especially when applying for programmes in faculties such as Health Sciences or Engineering.
  7. Do not enter the duration of the programme. You are applying to go into 1st year of study.
  8. In accordance with the POPI Act, applicants are required to complete their own applications and accept the University’s legal declaration of indemnity and undertaking. The University will not engage with third-party agents facilitating applications on behalf of applicants.
  9. An application fee of R100 for South African citizens, and R700 for foreign citizens, is required. Log into the self-service portal.

Documents Required for WITS Online Application

While considering your application to the university of Witswatersrand (WITS), you are required to gather the following documents below as without them your application may turn up incomplete and it will get rejected by the university. The documents include the following:

  • A copy of your ID
  • A copy of your results for the latest school year
  • Certified Academic Transcript
  • Interim Academic Record
  • Actuarial Society Exemptions / Actuarial Society Passes
  • A copy of your Person/Student number
  • IELTS English Proficiency / Proof of English Proficiency
  • Graduation Certificate
  • Matric / Foreign School Leaving Certificate
  • Proof of Academic Completion toward Fellowship

WITS Admission Requirements

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC), Independent Examinations Board (IEB), or South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) subjects
  • Applicants are required to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBT) before being considered for admission
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with three fundamental subjects between 60 – 69% OR three vocational subjects from the designated list between 70-79%
  • Taken English as either a language of learning and teaching or as the first additional language
  • Taken Mathematics as a fundamental component
  • Achieved 70-79% for all seven subjects – in fundamental and vocational categories.
