Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) online applications for the 2025 academic year, are now available for individuals interested in pursuing new undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications. The application window for SMU runs from April 2nd to August 30st 2024. All applicants, regardless of nationality or language, are encouraged to apply. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is the only health sciences university in South Africa. The University is strategically positioned to focus on multidisciplinary health research that will provide solutions to ease the quadruple burden of disease facing the country.

Academic activities in Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is carried out in five different schools. that is to say that SMU comprises of five different schools and the include

  1. School of Medicine
  2. School of Health Care Sciences
  3. School of Oral Health Sciences
  4. School of Science And Technology
  5. School of Pharmacy

SMU Online Application Closing Dates

Just as the management of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has made available its application dates, it has also brought it to public notice its closing dates.The closing dates is stated as follows:

Applications for the 2025 academic year for all programmes open on 2 April 2024 and close as follows:

  • Wednesday, 31 July 2024 for undergraduate qualifications
  • Friday, 30 August 2024 for postgraduate qualifications

Applicants were encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointments as Late applications and/or walk-ins will NOT be allowed as the University receives high number of applications for each of the programmes on offer.

SMU Online Application Process

Online application to SMU is not free as you will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of R300 online. And this payment will be sent to a certain bank as stated by the institution.

To apply online, you need:

  1. Access to the internet and a valid email address;
  2. To complete the application accurately online;
  3. To specify the names of your first and second choice degrees (if applicable);
  4. Pay the R300 non-refundable application fee; and
  5. Upload the following the documents:
  • Certified copy of yourID or Birth Certificate.
  • Certified copy of final Grade 11 results or National Senior Certificate (NSC)/Matric Certificate (if you have completed Grade 12/Matric).
  • Official academic record(s) from previous universities attended, including SMU (if applicable).
  • Proof of payment for application
  • Certified copy of your ID

For international students

All non-South African citizens and non-permanent residents are required to:

  • submit the documents mentioned in number (e) above;
  • submit previous foreign qualifications that have been evaluated by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
  • obtain study permits prior to registering as students. Application for study permits should be submitted to the Department of Home Affairs (South Africa), Consulate or High Commissioner in your country of residence/origin, and should be in favour of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). The study permit should to be submitted during registration.

How to Track Your Online Application

If you have successfully applied to the university, and you wish to constantly check if you have been accepted or not, you need not to worry as the university will begin its selections on the following dates:

  • Pre-selections will be done between September and November 2024, using your Grade 11 results and you will be informed about the outcome.
  • Final selections will take place in January 2025, after the release of Grade 12/NSC results by the Department of Basic Education and Independent Examinations Board.
  • There will be SMS and email notifications and/or telephone calls to applicants.
  • You can also check the status of your application on smu.ac.za after the release of Grade 12 results early in 2025.
